How Tangerine's Orange Key referral bonus works

What Tangerine's Refer a Friend offer pays, the four conditions a new client has to meet, how long the $50 takes to arrive, and the fine print worth reading first.

Disclosure: This site lists a Tangerine Orange Key on its Tangerine page. It is a referral code: if you become a client using it, the people who run Kairo receive a referral reward. This guide is not financial advice. How this works

The short version

Everything below comes from two Tangerine pages, the Refer a Friend page and the Refer a Friend Offer Terms and Conditions, as they read on October 11, 2026. Tangerine can change or end the offer without notice, so read both before you rely on any number here.

What an Orange Key is

The terms define an Orange Key as "a unique Refer a Friend number assigned to each Tangerine Client". It is what connects a new sign-up to the person who referred them, and it is entered during enrolment. The page says the field is "on one of the first screens when you first sign up".

Who counts as a new client

The terms are strict here: a new client is "a person that has never had an ING DIRECT or Tangerine Account". The definition has no time limit, so an account closed years ago under either name rules you out.

The four conditions

Both bonuses depend on the new client completing all of these:

  1. Enrol with a valid Orange Key from an existing client.
  2. Open a first Tangerine account, other than a credit card. The account counts as opened once you have met its own terms and it has no restrictions on it.
  3. Deposit or invest at least $250 within 60 days of becoming a client.
  4. Keep a balance of at least $250 for 60 consecutive days, counted from the day that first $250 goes in.

Tangerine's own FAQ is blunt about the fourth one: if the balance drops below $250 during those 60 days, "you will no longer qualify", and neither does the person who referred you. The terms do not describe a way to restart the count.

For mortgages and other loans, the minimum deposit conditions don't apply.

How long it takes

The terms give three periods. Putting them end to end is my arithmetic, not a schedule Tangerine publishes:

So someone who deposits on the day they sign up could wait up to about 90 days for the $50. Someone who deposits on day 60 could wait up to about 150 days from sign-up. If you want the money sooner, the part you control is how quickly you make the deposit.

Which accounts count, and where the bonus goes

Tangerine's FAQ says all its accounts are eligible except credit cards, and that this includes mortgages and loans. For investment fund accounts, the page says the initial investment needs to be $250 or more.

The bonus itself is paid only into a non-registered Tangerine Savings Account or a Tangerine Chequing Account. If you have both, it goes to chequing. If you have neither, for example because your first account was a TFSA or an investment account, the terms say you will need to open one to receive the bonus. On a joint account, only the primary account holder is eligible.

Can you combine it with other Tangerine offers?

The two pages do not say quite the same thing. The FAQ on the referral page answers "Can I combine this with another promo?" with "Of course." The terms say referred clients "can't combine the Offer with any other Tangerine enrollment Bonus offers except as otherwise permitted and set out in a particular promotional offer". The terms also say that where they conflict with other material from the bank, the terms prevail.

When I read the referral page it also advertised a payroll bonus for new chequing clients and a promotional savings rate, each with its own terms and end dates. I can't tell you from these pages which of those stack with the $50. If your plan depends on getting more than one offer, read the terms of each and ask Tangerine before you open the account, because the key can't be changed afterwards.

Fine print that is easy to miss

If you are the one referring

An existing client can earn up to six referral bonuses per calendar year, $300 in total at the standard amount. The count resets on January 1 and unused referrals don't carry over. A referral earns nothing for the referrer if the new client signed up with someone else's key, or with no key at all.

Who the offer is meant for

The terms describe Refer a Friend as an offer between people with "a close personal or family relationship". They also say Orange Keys are for personal, non-commercial use and "may not be transferred or sold or mass distributed". This site lists an Orange Key on its Tangerine page, and you should weigh that clause when deciding whose key to use. If a friend or relative banks with Tangerine, their key fits the offer's terms most plainly, and the $50 on your side is the same.

Common questions

When is the Tangerine referral bonus paid?

Tangerine's terms say within 30 days of the new client completing all the conditions, into a non-registered Tangerine Savings Account or a Tangerine Chequing Account. The last condition is holding at least $250 for 60 days in a row.

What happens if my balance drops below $250 before the 60 days are up?

Tangerine's FAQ says you no longer qualify for the $50, and neither does the person who referred you. The balance has to stay at $250 or more for 60 consecutive days from the day the first $250 goes in.

Can I add an Orange Key after I've already signed up?

The terms require you to enrol using the key, and Tangerine's page says the field is on one of the first sign-up screens. The terms describe no way to add a key afterwards, and say a submitted key can't be reversed.

Does opening a Tangerine credit card count?

Not as the first account. The terms exclude Tangerine credit cards from the account-opening condition. Tangerine's FAQ says its other accounts are eligible, including mortgages and loans.
